Geology

Geology is the science of the Earth: the study of the materials from which it is made, the processes that have shaped it over billions of years, and the record of those processes preserved in the rocks, minerals, and fossils that form the geological archive. It is a discipline that combines physical and chemical science with a distinctive historical dimension, seeking to reconstruct the deep past of a planet that has been continuously changing since its formation. At the University of Bristol, this three-year full-time programme is built for students who are curious about the planet and interested in finding solutions to global problems, as the current description accurately captures. You will learn about the physics, chemistry, and history of the Earth by examining rocks, minerals, and fossils at scales from the atomic to the landscape, and you will use remote sensing techniques alongside direct field observation to explore the structure and chemistry of parts of the Earth that are inaccessible to direct examination. Bristol has strong research profiles in geochemistry, palaeontology, petrology, and environmental earth science, and the teaching reflects the discipline at the level of active research inquiry.

Fieldwork is a central and distinctive feature of geology education: you will spend time in the field, learning to read landscapes and rock outcrops directly, developing the observational and interpretive skills that distinguish geologists from laboratory scientists alone.

Geology graduates work in oil and gas exploration, mining and mineral resources, environmental consultancy and site investigation, engineering geology, hydrogeology, national geological surveys, academic research, and science communication.
