Geography/Theatre Studies

Geography and theatre studies is an unusual combination, but one that opens up distinctive ways of thinking about space, place, performance and the relationship between the physical world and human culture. Geography examines the variability of landscapes, the interrelationships between physical and human environments, and the local and global forces that shape how people live and move across the Earth. Theatre studies examines how performance creates meaning, how drama has functioned as a social and political force across different cultures, and what the practice of making and presenting theatre actually involves.

Together, they develop two quite different but complementary modes of engaging with the world.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you an international dimension to both your geographical and theatrical education. You will develop skills in geographical analysis, including qualitative and statistical data interpretation, fieldwork and independent research, alongside the practical and theoretical study of performance, dramatic literature and theatre history. The programme draws on geography's concern with place, environment and human experience and on theatre's concern with how that experience is represented and transformed through performance.

With a typical entry tariff of 200 UCAS points, this is a demanding degree that attracts students with broad intellectual and creative interests.

Graduates from geography and theatre studies programmes pursue careers across an unusually wide range of fields. The geographical training opens pathways into environmental consultancy, urban planning, international development, research and the public sector, while the theatre training supports careers in performance, arts administration, writing, education and the creative industries. Many graduates find the combination of analytical and creative skills particularly valuable in communications, media, cultural policy and organisations that require both rigorous thinking and the ability to engage audiences.
