Geography/Music

Geography and Music is an unusual combination that brings together two of the broadest and most intellectually diverse subjects available at university. Geography is the study of the Earth's surface as the site of human living and physical processes, examining the variability of landscapes, environments, and human societies and the interactions between them. It ranges from coastal management and environmental hazards to migration, urban change, and the politics of space and place.

Music encompasses the study, analysis, performance, and creative dimensions of one of the oldest and most universal human practices.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year, full-time degree allows you to pursue both disciplines seriously, developing the qualitative and quantitative analytical skills that geography demands alongside the musicological, compositional, and performance knowledge that music study requires. Through geography, you will engage with some of the most urgent local and global issues of our time, developing skills in data analysis, independent research, and fieldwork. Through music, you will build your understanding of musical tradition, theory, and practice in ways that cultivate creativity and critical listening.

The degree includes the option of a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to pursue one or both subjects in an international academic environment.

The breadth of this combination is also its particular strength at the point of employment. Geography develops skills in spatial reasoning, data interpretation, and understanding social and environmental systems, which are valued in planning, environmental consultancy, the civil service, and research.
