Geography/Celtic Studies
Geography and Celtic studies are an unusual but intellectually rewarding combination that connects the scientific and social analysis of place and landscape with the study of language, literature, and culture in the Celtic-speaking traditions of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Geography investigates how the surface of the Earth is shaped by physical processes and transformed by human activity, examining the relationships between physical and human landscapes and the spatial dimensions of issues ranging from coastal management to migration and urban change. Celtic studies brings linguistic and literary depth, engaging with traditions that are inseparable from the landscapes in which they developed.
This four-year full-time degree at the University of Glasgow draws on strong research programmes in both geography and Celtic studies at one of Scotland's leading universities. You will engage with geography as a dynamic, relevant discipline at the heart of many local and global issues, developing skills in qualitative and statistical data analysis, fieldwork, and independent research. The Celtic studies component introduces you to one or more of the Celtic languages alongside the literatures, cultures, and histories associated with them, developing both linguistic competence and cultural understanding.
A year abroad is integrated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study in a different linguistic and geographical environment. A typical entry tariff of 200 points applies.
Graduates from this combination carry a distinctive profile that is valued in cultural organisations, local and regional government, heritage bodies, environmental agencies, tourism, and academic research. The geographical skills you develop transfer readily to planning, GIS, environmental consultancy, and development work, while the Celtic studies background opens doors in education, broadcasting, translation, and cultural policy. Postgraduate study in geography, Celtic languages and literatures, cultural studies, or environmental management is a natural continuation.
