Geography

Geography is the discipline that examines the relationship between people and place, exploring how physical environments shape human societies and how human activity transforms the natural world. It is genuinely interdisciplinary, drawing on the natural sciences to understand climate, landforms, and ecosystems, and on the social sciences to examine cities, economies, migration, inequality, and political power. The ability to think across that boundary, connecting environmental processes to social and political dynamics, is one of the most distinctive and valuable things a geography degree develops.

At York St John University, you will study geography over three years full-time, balancing human, physical, and environmental geography to give you a broad and integrated understanding of the subject. A foundation year is available for students who would benefit from additional preparation before engaging with the full degree. The programme covers topics including geomorphology, climate change, urban geography, development, and environmental management, and the course is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers, which is a recognised mark of quality in the discipline.

The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement provision, giving you substantial professional experience and international exposure before you graduate. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points.

Geography graduates are consistently among the most employable in the social and environmental sciences. Environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, conservation, international development, the civil service, teaching, local government, and climate and sustainability roles in business are all common destinations.
