Geography

Geography is one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary of the university disciplines, spanning the physical processes that shape the Earth's surface, the human activities that transform landscapes and environments, and the interactions between the two. It asks how mountains and rivers form, how climate systems work, why cities grow where they do, how inequality is distributed across space, and what the consequences of environmental change will be for the communities that depend on particular places. The breadth of geography is one of its greatest strengths, producing graduates with a distinctive combination of analytical, quantitative, and qualitative skills.

At Aberystwyth this four-year programme includes an integrated foundation year at the start, designed for students who do not have a sufficient or relevant academic background for direct entry to the degree but who have the aptitude and commitment to succeed with additional preparation. The foundation year provides a solid academic base in the sciences and social sciences relevant to geography, and students who complete it successfully progress to the full undergraduate geography degree from year two. Across the full programme you will develop both physical and human geography skills, including fieldwork in Wales's diverse landscapes, quantitative data analysis, research methods, and the ability to engage with geographical literature and debate.

Aberystwyth's location in mid-Wales, surrounded by varied upland and coastal environments, makes it particularly well suited to the fieldwork component of geographical study.

Geography graduates enter a wide range of careers, reflecting the breadth of the discipline. Environmental consultancy, planning, GIS and spatial data analysis, teaching, international development, the civil service, journalism, and research are all common destinations. The combination of quantitative skills, environmental knowledge, and social analysis that geography develops is valued across public, private, and voluntary sector organisations.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, planning, or related fields, including geography teacher training programmes.
