Geography with Foundation Year
Geography is one of the broadest and most inherently interdisciplinary of university subjects, spanning the physical processes that shape the Earth's surface, the human societies and economies that inhabit it, and the environmental challenges that arise from the complex relationships between the two. Studying geography means developing fluency in both the natural sciences and the social sciences, moving between quantitative field and laboratory methods and the qualitative approaches of social and cultural analysis. At York St John University this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, giving you a structured entry into the discipline before the main degree content begins. The programme balances human, physical and environmental geography, ensuring that you develop a broad and rounded understanding of the subject rather than specialising too narrowly too soon. You will engage with topics including climate systems, geomorphology, urban geography, economic development, environmental management, migration and social justice, developing fieldwork skills, data literacy and the ability to produce well-evidenced geographical analysis.
The programme is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society with IBG, reflecting its alignment with professional standards in the field. It also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, providing direct professional and international experience.
Graduates of geography pursue careers in environmental and ecological consultancy, urban and regional planning, environmental management, the civil service, NGOs and international development, geography teaching, geographic information systems, disaster risk management, sustainability consulting and research.
