Geography with a Language

Geography with a Language addresses the global dimensions of the discipline directly, equipping you to understand the world's environmental, social and political challenges with both analytical and linguistic tools. Geography is an unusually broad subject, spanning the physical processes that shape landscapes, the social forces that determine where and how people live, the politics of territory and resources, and the environmental consequences of human activity. Adding a language to that breadth gives you the capacity to engage with different countries, cultures and academic traditions in their own terms.

At the University of Sussex, the three-year full-time programme brings a global perspective to questions of people, place and the planet. You will study climate change, migration, conflict, geopolitics, environmental justice and urban development, developing both the conceptual frameworks and the research methods to investigate them rigorously. The language component runs alongside the geographical study, developing your proficiency and your understanding of the cultural context the language carries.

The degree includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation, a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as a work placement, giving you a substantial range of opportunities to develop professional experience and international knowledge before graduation.

Sussex's interdisciplinary tradition and its location in Brighton, a city with a strong international character and active connections to environmental and social justice movements, makes it a stimulating environment for this kind of study.

Graduates work in environmental policy, international development, urban and regional planning, sustainability consultancy, the civil service, journalism, international organisations and NGOs. Language skills open doors in international business, translation, the diplomatic service and cross-cultural research. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, development studies or area studies.
