Geography is a discipline of exceptional range, concerned with the physical processes that shape the Earth's surface and climate alongside the human geographies of economy, society, and culture. It sits at the junction of natural and social science, using both quantitative data analysis and qualitative research methods to address questions about the environment, land use, urban development, migration, and the interaction between human activity and ecological systems. As climate change and sustainability have moved to the centre of public debate, geography graduates have become more sought after than ever.

At the University of Salford, this three-year full-time programme builds your understanding of the processes that shape the environment and of how humans respond to an ever-changing world, with a particular emphasis on mitigating climate change and enhancing sustainability. A sandwich year is built in, giving you the opportunity to work in an environmental, planning, or geography-related organisation before your final year. Work placement is also available.

These professional experiences are important not just for your CV but for the practical understanding of how geographical knowledge is applied in real contexts. The programme is delivered in a dynamic and engaging way that reflects the urgency of contemporary environmental challenges.

You will study physical geography and geomorphology, climatology, urban and economic geography, GIS and remote sensing, environmental management, and research methods, developing both scientific and social scientific capabilities.

Graduates go on to work in environmental management, sustainability, urban planning, GIS and mapping, environmental consultancy, local and national government, international development, research, and education. The combination of physical and human geography skills is valued across a wide range of sectors. Postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, or planning is a common next step.
