Geography

Geography is a discipline of unusual breadth, sitting at the intersection of the natural sciences and the social sciences and engaging with some of the most pressing challenges of the present. Physical geography examines the Earth's systems, including climate, hydrology, soils, coasts, and landforms, and the processes that shape and reshape them. Human geography investigates how people, societies, and economies interact with each other and with the physical world, examining spatial patterns of development and inequality, urbanisation, migration, and the politics of environmental change.

Together they equip you to think about complex problems that span both the human and the natural.

At Chester this three-year full-time programme, which is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society, equips you with the knowledge and skills to tackle pressing global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and resource insecurity through a blend of hands-on learning, international experiences, and practical skills development. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements integrated throughout, giving you sustained professional and international experience alongside your academic study. Fieldwork is central to geography education, and you will have opportunities to engage with environments and communities beyond the classroom.

You will develop skills in quantitative and qualitative research methods, data analysis, geographic information systems, and the ability to communicate complex geographic information clearly.

Graduates of geography programmes move into careers in environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, sustainability and climate policy, development, teaching, the civil service, and a wide range of other roles where geographic thinking and research skills are valued. Many continue to postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, or related fields.
