Geography asks fundamental questions about the world we inhabit: how landscapes form and change, how climates operate, how human societies are organised in space, why some places are wealthy and others are not, and what consequences follow from the way we use and alter our environments. In the twenty-first century these questions have become more urgent than ever, as climate change, biodiversity loss, urbanisation, and growing inequality place increasing pressure on both the natural and social systems that sustain human life.

At Cumbria this three-year full-time degree is taught from the Ambleside campus in the heart of the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This location is genuinely distinctive: the surrounding landscape provides immediate access to a remarkable variety of natural and cultural environments, from upland fell systems and glaciated valleys to historic settlements and working agricultural land. Field investigation is central to the programme, and you will develop hands-on skills in environmental observation, data collection, and spatial analysis in one of the most geographically rich settings available to any UK geography student.

You will build both physical and human geography skills across the degree, developing the quantitative and qualitative tools needed to investigate environmental processes and social phenomena. Digital tools, including geographical information systems and remote sensing, are integrated throughout, reflecting the increasingly central role of spatial data analysis in geography's professional practice.

Graduates move into careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, national park management, local government, rural planning, geography teaching, sustainability, and research. The degree's distinctive field-based ethos and its Lake District setting make it particularly well suited to students interested in the natural environment and rural land management, though the skills it develops are applicable across a wide range of environmental and public sector roles. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in geography or environmental management.
