About this course

Geography is one of the most genuinely broad disciplines available at university, spanning both the physical world and the human societies that inhabit and transform it. It studies glaciers and rivers, climate systems and tectonic forces, but also cities and migration, inequality and development, politics and culture. Where most disciplines stake out a distinct territory, geography refuses easy boundaries, asking how the physical and human dimensions of the world interact, and developing the analytical range to engage with both scientific data and social interpretation.

At Swansea University, this three-year full-time BSc Geography programme offers a research-informed understanding of the world across human geography, physical geography, environmental science, and geology, giving you the flexibility to shape your studies in ways that reflect your particular interests and ambitions. You will engage with quantitative and qualitative methods, fieldwork, and GIS technology, developing the capacity to collect, analyse, and communicate geographical information across a range of contexts. The BSc designation reflects the programme's strength in scientific and quantitative approaches, but Swansea's broad curriculum ensures you develop conceptual and analytical depth in both the human and physical dimensions of the subject.

Fieldwork is a central component of geographical education, and you will have opportunities to work in the field both locally and further afield.

You will develop strong analytical, research, and communication skills, the ability to work with quantitative data and spatial analysis tools, and the intellectual flexibility that comes from engaging seriously with both the natural and social dimensions of the world.

Geography graduates go on to careers in environmental consultancy, planning, GIS analysis, international development, conservation, local government, teaching, business analysis, and research. The discipline's breadth means that graduates are genuinely versatile. Postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, urban planning, or related fields is a well-supported route.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: critique sessions are tough but push your work to the next level. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable…

Would do it again
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city —…
