Geography
Geography is a uniquely integrative discipline, bringing together the study of the physical environment and the study of human societies in ways that no other subject does. It asks how the Earth's physical systems, including climate, landforms, rivers, oceans and ecosystems, work and change, and it asks how human societies have organised themselves across space, how they have used and modified the physical environment, and how geographical patterns of inequality, migration, urbanisation and resource use are produced and maintained. The discipline is both scientifically rigorous and socially engaged, combining fieldwork, quantitative data analysis, GIS and spatial thinking with qualitative and theoretical approaches drawn from the social sciences.
At Sheffield Hallam University this programme includes a foundation year, providing a pathway into degree-level study, and is studied part time, giving you the flexibility to develop your geographical knowledge alongside work or other commitments. The course also includes a sandwich year and work-placement experience, connecting academic study to professional practice and giving you the opportunity to apply geographical skills in real-world settings. The programme is professionally accredited by the Royal Geographical Society, which reflects the quality and relevance of the degree to professional practice in geography-related fields.
