Geography

Geography is uniquely placed among the disciplines in that it refuses to separate the human from the physical, the local from the global, or the past from the present. It asks why places are as they are, how environments are made and unmade by human and natural forces, what it means to develop and for whom, and how we should understand and respond to the crises, from climate change to urban inequality, that define our times. It is a subject that cultivates both quantitative and qualitative thinking, spatial analysis and cultural interpretation, making it exceptionally versatile in the labour market and intellectually rich as a course of study.

At King's College London, this three-year full-time degree covers development geography, environmental geography, urban and cultural geography, and spatial data science, with pathways into physical geography and environmental science. You will develop skills in fieldwork, geographic information systems, statistical analysis, qualitative research methods and academic writing, building the versatility that makes geography graduates attractive to such a wide range of employers. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in a different country and to bring a genuinely comparative geographical perspective to your understanding of places and systems.

Geography graduates are among the most broadly employable of all arts and science graduates. Careers span environmental consulting, urban planning, international development, data analysis, policy research, the civil service, sustainability and corporate social responsibility roles, education, journalism and finance. The combination of analytical and communication skills the subject develops, together with real experience of fieldwork and spatial data, positions graduates well for roles that require them to understand places, people and systems.

Many graduates also pursue postgraduate degrees in geography, urban planning, environmental management, data science or development studies.
