About this course

Human geography asks how people shape and are shaped by the places they inhabit, examining the social, economic, political and cultural processes that produce the world's varied landscapes and communities. It is a discipline concerned with understanding inequality, migration, development, urbanisation, globalisation and environmental change through a spatial and social lens. Studying human geography develops both analytical rigour and a strong appreciation for the complexity of the human world, and it equips you to engage seriously with some of the most pressing issues of contemporary life.

At the University of Keele this three-year full-time programme explores the dynamics of human behaviour, social inequalities and global challenges through an accredited BSc curriculum. You will gain hands-on experience through laboratory work, immersive fieldwork and industry placements, building a portfolio of practical and analytical skills alongside your theoretical understanding. A sandwich year gives you the opportunity for substantial professional experience before your final year, the option to study abroad adds an international dimension, and work placement opportunities throughout the programme connect academic learning with professional practice.

The programme develops competencies in geospatial data analysis, fieldwork methods, quantitative and qualitative research, GIS, environmental assessment and critical spatial thinking. These skills are valued across a wide range of public and private sector employers.

Graduates pursue careers as geospatial data analysts, urban and town planners, international development workers, environmental consultants, policy analysts, public sector managers and researchers. Human geography's broad skill base means graduates are well suited to roles in local government, NGOs, consultancies, the NHS, the civil service and the private sector. Postgraduate study in geography, urban planning, international development, environmental management or data science is a natural next step for those who wish to specialise further.

Highly recommend
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost…

Genuinely worthwhile
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the final show is a proper platform β€” industry people come to see it. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with plen…
