Geography (Human and Physical) with Professional Experience

Geography at its broadest is the study of the Earth and the complex relationships between its physical processes and the human societies that inhabit it. A programme that covers both human and physical geography asks you to move between two complementary perspectives: the physical geographer's concern with landforms, climate systems, rivers, and ecosystems, and the human geographer's interest in how people organise space, respond to environmental change, and distribute resources and opportunity across the planet. The two are inseparable: climate change, flood risk, migration, urban growth, and food security all demand an understanding of both.

At the University of Reading, this four-year full-time programme incorporates a professional experience component, connecting your academic study directly with the world of work. You will develop expertise across both strands of the discipline, studying physical processes alongside human geography topics such as development, urbanisation, political geography, and cultural landscapes. The professional experience element gives you direct engagement with an organisation working on geographically relevant challenges, whether in environmental consultancy, planning, policy, research, or another setting.

You will also develop quantitative and field skills that are directly valued by employers: the ability to collect, analyse, and present spatial data is a core competence for professional geographers.

Geography graduates work in environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, local and national government, international development, education, mapping and geographic information systems, sustainability roles in business, and research. The breadth of the discipline means graduates are adaptable and can move between sectors with relative ease. The professional experience element is a significant advantage in a competitive graduate market.

Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, planning, development, or climate policy, building on the undergraduate foundations to develop more specialised expertise.
