Geography

Geography is a uniquely broad discipline that bridges the physical and human sciences, asking how and why the world looks the way it does. It examines the economic, cultural, social, and political processes that shape the landscapes, cities, and communities we inhabit, as well as the physical systems of climate, ecology, and geology that provide the environmental context for human life. Geography develops the ability to think spatially, to work with diverse kinds of evidence, and to draw connections across what might otherwise seem like separate fields of knowledge.

At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this four-year extended degree gives you additional time to build the conceptual framework and research skills of geography before focusing in on your areas of interest. The programme begins with a broad introduction to geography in both its human and physical dimensions, developing the disciplinary foundation that gives you the flexibility to pursue deeper engagement with human geography themes as the degree progresses. You will explore how economic processes, cultural change, political decisions, and social inequalities produce different kinds of places and different outcomes for the people who live in them, and you will develop the quantitative, qualitative, and spatial research methods that geographers use to investigate these questions.

This full-time programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, providing professional experience and international exposure alongside your academic study. The combination of field skills, analytical capability, and real-world experience makes geography graduates competitive across a wide range of career paths, including environmental consultancy, urban planning, international development, data analysis, civil service, journalism, and education. Further postgraduate study in geography, urban planning, or development is also a natural route.
