About this course

Geography is the discipline that examines the relationship between human societies and the physical world they inhabit, from the landscapes and climates that shape where and how people live to the socio-economic, cultural, political, and environmental forces that drive change at local, national, and global scales. Human geography, in particular, explores how inequality, power, culture, migration, urbanisation, and environmental change intersect in places and landscapes around the world. It is a discipline that demands both rigorous social scientific thinking and geographical imagination, asking you to situate specific places and processes within the bigger picture of a changing world.

At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time BA (Hons) specialises in human geography, developing your understanding of the socio-economic, cultural, political, and environmental issues facing today's world. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside the academic content. You will develop skills in geographical research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, geographic information systems, fieldwork, and the interpretation of spatial data.

The fieldwork component is central to geography degrees, and you will have the opportunity to investigate real places and real issues in contexts that bring the discipline's questions to life.

Geography graduates are found in a wide range of careers that value the ability to think spatially, interpret data, and understand the relationships between social and environmental systems. Environmental consultancy, planning, international development, public health, local government, GIS and mapping, teaching, and the charity sector are among the most common destinations. The combination of social science rigour, quantitative skills, and spatial awareness is particularly valuable in roles at the intersection of planning, sustainability, and data analysis.

Postgraduate study in human geography, urban planning, environmental management, GIS, or international development is a natural next step for those wishing to specialise further.
