Geography and Statistics

Geography and statistics is a combination that reflects how the discipline of geography has evolved. Geography has always been about understanding the patterns and processes that shape the physical and human world, from climate systems and landforms to cities, populations, and economies. Statistics provides the rigorous analytical tools to describe, model, and interpret those patterns quantitatively.

Together, the two disciplines give you the ability to ask serious geographical questions and to answer them with the methods that make evidence-based claims possible.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme challenges you to think critically and creatively about the world around you, developing your understanding of environmental systems and human activity and the ways they interact. You will study physical geography, human geography, and statistical theory and methods, building the capacity to work with spatial data, geographic information systems, quantitative modelling, and the analytical techniques used in both environmental science and social research. The programme rewards students who want to engage with the intellectual rigour of both geography and quantitative methods, and you will develop skills that are increasingly valuable as data about the physical and social world becomes richer and more widely available.
