Geography and Politics

Geography and politics is a combination that makes intuitive sense in a world where the most important political questions, climate change, resource scarcity, migration, territorial disputes, and the uneven geography of development and inequality, are deeply spatial in character. Geography provides the tools to understand how physical environments, human settlements, and spatial inequalities are structured and how they change over time. Politics gives you the frameworks to understand how power operates, how institutions shape collective decisions, and how societies govern themselves and relate to each other.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands you will engage with both disciplines across a four-year programme. Geography will develop your understanding of physical and human geography, including environmental change, urban and rural development, and the spatial dimensions of social and economic inequality. Politics will introduce you to political theory, comparative government, international relations, and the policy debates that shape contemporary political life.

The combination means your political analysis is enriched by geographical awareness of the spatial dimensions of power, and your geographical thinking is informed by political understanding of the institutions and forces that shape landscapes and places.
