Geography and Philosophy

Geography and philosophy is a combination that rewards those who want to think carefully about both the physical world and the human societies embedded within it. Geography examines the relationship between people and environments, investigating how landscapes are shaped by natural processes, how human activities alter those landscapes and how social, economic and political forces produce the spatial patterns we see in cities, regions and global flows. Philosophy asks the foundational questions that underlie all enquiry, about knowledge and its limits, about causality and explanation, about ethics and the values that should guide human action, including action in response to environmental challenge.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme challenges those who wish to think critically and creatively about the world around them and understand the interaction of environmental systems and human activity. You will develop skills in geographical fieldwork and data analysis alongside philosophical reasoning and conceptual analysis, moving between empirical investigation of the world and theoretical reflection on the frameworks we use to understand it. The programme is particularly well suited to students who are curious about environmental ethics, the philosophy of science, spatial justice and the conceptual dimensions of climate change and sustainability debates.
