Geography and Italian

Geography and Italian is a pairing that might seem unexpected at first, but the two disciplines share a deep interest in place, culture, and the relationship between human societies and their physical environments. Geography asks how landscapes are formed and transformed, how populations move and settle, how cities grow and decline, and how global environmental and economic forces play out in particular places. Italian opens a window onto one of Europe's most significant cultural, linguistic, and historical traditions, as well as onto the language spoken by a major European economy.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree invites you to think critically and creatively across both fields.

You will engage with the physical and human dimensions of geography, covering topics such as geomorphology, climate, urban systems, political geography, development, and environmental change. In Italian, you will develop language competence alongside the study of Italian literature, history, cinema, and culture, reading primary texts and engaging with contemporary Italian society. The combination encourages you to bring a comparative perspective to questions about place and identity, and to understand Italy's geography and culture with the kind of depth that language study alone makes possible.

A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to live and study in an Italian-speaking environment, which is transformative for both language fluency and cultural understanding. The typical entry tariff is 232 UCAS points.

Geography with Italian graduates find careers in international business, environmental consultancy, development organisations, cultural diplomacy, translation and interpreting, teaching, and the public sector.
