Geography and International Development
Geography and international development are disciplines that connect naturally through their shared concern with inequality, sustainability, and the relationship between people and the environments they inhabit. Geography provides the analytical tools to understand how physical and human systems interact across different scales, from local communities to global patterns of trade and climate. International development asks why some societies are wealthier and more secure than others, how development processes work and sometimes fail, and what role policy, aid, and governance play in shaping life chances around the world.
At Sussex, this programme explores the deep connections between questions of place, environment, and human development, examining topics including climate change, migration, poverty, and inequality through a lens that takes both the geographical and the development perspective seriously. You will engage with theoretical frameworks from both disciplines and develop practical research skills, including fieldwork, quantitative analysis, and qualitative methods. A foundation year is available for students who need additional preparation, and a sandwich year in industry, a work placement, and a year abroad are all built in, giving you significant professional and international experience before you graduate.
Sussex has a strong tradition in development studies and is located close to London's international development sector.
Graduates are well placed for careers in international development organisations, NGOs, government departments, environmental consultancies, policy research, and journalism. The combination of geographical analysis and development thinking is particularly valued in organisations working on climate adaptation, sustainable development, and humanitarian response. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in development studies, human geography, environmental policy, or international relations, and some pursue careers in academic research.
