Geography and Economics

Geography and economics is a combination that addresses some of the most important questions of our time from complementary angles. Geography studies both social and physical environments, analysing how places are made, how resources are distributed, and how human and natural systems interact. Economics provides the analytical tools to understand how markets, institutions, and policies shape these processes, and to evaluate the trade-offs involved in different approaches to resource allocation and development.

Together they equip you with the breadth and rigour to engage with challenges from climate change and urbanisation to inequality and global trade.

At the University of Dundee, you will study across both disciplines, developing creative skills in problem-solving, presentation, and communication alongside your substantive knowledge of geography and economic theory. You will engage with fieldwork, spatial analysis, and quantitative economic methods, building a hybrid skill set that is valued in research, policy, and commercial roles. The programme includes a year abroad and runs over four years full-time.

Graduates of geography and economics degrees pursue careers in economic policy, environmental consultancy, international development, the civil service, financial analysis, urban planning, and research. The combination of geographical thinking and economic analysis is particularly valuable in roles concerned with sustainable development, regional inequality, infrastructure, and the green economy. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in economics, geography, environmental policy, or development studies, where the quantitative and analytical skills developed at undergraduate level provide a strong foundation.
