About this course

Games technology is the technical discipline at the heart of how video games are built. Where games design focuses on the creative and conceptual dimensions of games, games technology is concerned with the programming, engine systems, rendering pipelines, physics simulation, artificial intelligence, audio systems and real-time computing that make the designed experience actually work. It is a demanding technical field that requires both deep programming skill and the problem-solving ability to build performant systems under tight computational constraints, across platforms from mobile to console to VR.

At Coventry University you will study games technology over four years of full-time study, developing advanced programming, game engine and real-time computing skills through hands-on projects and industry collaboration using modern technologies. A sandwich year and the opportunity for a year abroad extend the programme with professional and international experience, and work placement is integrated throughout, giving you exposure to how games are developed in real studio environments. The typical tariff of 88 reflects a programme that is accessible to students with strong programming aptitude and interest from a range of educational backgrounds.

Graduates work in the games industry as gameplay programmers, engine programmers, graphics programmers, AI programmers, tools developers, technical artists and technical directors. The UK games industry is one of the largest creative industries in the country, and the demand for technically skilled programmers across console, PC, mobile and VR platforms continues to grow. Beyond games, the real-time computing and performance optimisation skills developed through this programme are valued in simulation, defence technology, financial technology and visual effects.
