Gaelic Studies and Spanish & Latin American Studies

Gaelic and Spanish and Latin American studies brings together Scotland's oldest living language with the Spanish-speaking world's most widely distributed linguistic and cultural tradition. Scottish Gaelic is a Celtic language with a rich oral and written literature, a distinctive culture, and a contemporary significance in Scotland's linguistic identity, while Spanish opens access to Spain and a vast and diverse Latin American world whose literatures, histories, and contemporary social realities are among the most compelling in the global story. Studying both allows for the kind of comparative linguistic and cultural thinking that neither alone can fully develop.

At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year full-time programme allows you to develop in-depth study of Gaelic, either as a native speaker or as a complete beginner, alongside a serious engagement with Spanish and Latin American studies. You will have the option to specialise in either Spain or Latin America within the Hispanic component of the degree, developing both your linguistic competence in Spanish and your cultural and literary understanding of the tradition you choose. The Gaelic element brings you into contact with Scotland's own linguistic minority heritage and the broader context of Celtic language revitalisation and cultural policy.

With a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points, this is a substantial five-year commitment to two very different but equally rich language traditions.

Graduates from Gaelic and Hispanic studies programmes are well placed for careers in education, broadcasting, journalism, translation and interpreting, heritage and cultural organisations, government and public sector bodies with responsibility for language policy, international organisations, and NGOs working across the Spanish-speaking world. The combination of Scotland's indigenous language and one of the world's most widely spoken languages is genuinely rare and distinctive. Postgraduate study in Celtic languages, Hispanic studies, translation, or cultural policy is a natural continuation.
