Gaelic Studies and Sociology

Gaelic studies and sociology is a combination that connects the deep cultural traditions of Scotland's oldest living language with the analytical tools needed to understand how contemporary societies work. Gaelic is a language with more than fifteen centuries of continuous presence in Scotland, carrying with it a rich oral and literary tradition, distinctive ways of relating to landscape and community, and a living culture that is both historically rooted and actively evolving. Sociology examines modern societies through theoretical frameworks and empirical research, asking how social structures, institutions, and inequalities shape human experience.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme is taught by world-leading experts in the Gaelic field, and it is open to both native speakers and complete beginners. You will develop your Gaelic language skills and engage with Gaelic literature, history, and culture, from the classical bardic tradition to contemporary Gaelic media and creative writing. The sociology strand develops your understanding of social theory, research methods, and the empirical study of issues such as inequality, identity, migration, and social change.

The combination is particularly coherent when it comes to questions of minority language, cultural sustainability, and community identity, which are among the most significant social questions that Gaelic-speaking communities face.

The programme includes a year abroad, which broadens your perspective on both Gaelic and other minority language contexts internationally. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points.
