Gaelic Studies and Geography

Gaelic studies and geography is a combination that connects Scotland's oldest linguistic and cultural tradition with the spatial and environmental sciences that investigate the physical and human landscape those traditions inhabit. Gaelic is a Celtic language with deep roots in Scotland, spoken today in communities concentrated in the Highlands and Islands, and its literature, oral tradition, and cultural expression reflect a distinctive way of engaging with landscape, community, and identity. Geography offers the tools to understand those landscapes scientifically and socially, examining how physical processes shape terrain and how human communities adapt to, transform, and relate to their environments.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and combines the advantages of in-depth study of Gaelic language, literature, and culture with a rigorous education in geography. The programme is open to both native speakers and complete beginners in Gaelic, with appropriate language support at each level. You will develop your linguistic and literary knowledge of Gaelic alongside your understanding of the geographical processes and concepts that are particularly relevant to the Highland and Island landscapes in which the language is most alive, including environmental change, rural land use, coastal geomorphology, and the social geography of declining and reviving minority language communities.

The combination develops a distinctive and coherent set of skills relevant to the communities and landscapes of Scotland.

Graduates go on to careers in heritage, community development, Gaelic language promotion, environmental management, education, planning, and the public sector in Scotland and beyond.
