Gaelic/ Philosophy

Gaelic and philosophy is a combination that connects one of the most distinctive living languages and cultural traditions of the British Isles with one of the deepest intellectual traditions in human history. Scottish Gaelic is the language of a rich literary culture that encompasses ancient oral poetry, medieval literary manuscripts, religious texts, and a flourishing contemporary creative scene. Philosophy, the systematic attempt to arrive at reasoned answers to fundamental questions about knowledge, morality, reality, and human nature, is a discipline that develops the capacity for rigorous argument and careful conceptual analysis.

At Glasgow you will study Scottish Gaelic language and literature alongside a full programme in philosophy covering logic, ethics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and political philosophy. Gaelic study develops your linguistic skills and your engagement with a literary and cultural tradition that is deeply rooted in the landscape and history of Scotland. Philosophy develops your ability to construct and evaluate arguments, your sensitivity to conceptual distinctions, and your willingness to question assumptions that are usually left unexamined.

The combination produces graduates who can move between close linguistic and cultural engagement and the most abstract forms of intellectual inquiry, a range that is genuinely rare. The four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different national academic context.

Graduates pursue careers in education, public sector roles in Gaelic-medium contexts, arts and cultural organisations, publishing, media, academic research, and a wide range of professional roles where analytical thinking and communication skills matter. Many continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, Celtic languages, Scottish literature, or related humanities fields.
