French and German studied together at degree level gives you access to two of the most culturally significant languages in the world and two of the richest intellectual and literary traditions in European history. French carries with it the literature and philosophy of the Francophone world, from the Enlightenment to contemporary fiction, as well as access to contemporary France and the broader Francophone sphere. German opens the world of Central European thought, literature, and cultural history, alongside one of the most economically significant countries in Europe.

Together, the two languages and their associated cultures give you a dual perspective on European life and history that no single-language degree can provide.

At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme develops both languages to a high level of proficiency, combining structured language learning with the study of literature, film, history, and cultural thought in each tradition. In French, you will have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of topics from comics and song to medieval history and contemporary politics. In German, you will similarly engage with the cultural heritage of the German-speaking world across its breadth.

The programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience alongside your academic studies. The five-year duration provides the depth and time needed to develop genuine bilingual competence.

French and German graduates are among the most employable language graduates in the UK. Careers in international business, the European institutions, diplomatic service, international law, translation, interpreting, teaching, journalism, and cultural organisations all draw on the combination of two major European languages and the cultural depth this degree develops. Many graduates build careers in organisations with French and German-speaking operations, where genuine bilingualism is a significant professional asset.

Many also go on to postgraduate study in translation, European studies, comparative literature, or linguistics.
