French

French is one of the world's major languages, spoken across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond, and carrying an extraordinary literary, philosophical, and cultural heritage. Studying French at degree level means developing genuine linguistic competence, the ability to speak, write, read, and understand French with confidence and precision, while also engaging seriously with the cultures, histories, and societies of French-speaking communities worldwide. A French degree is an education in language as a system, in literature and cultural production, and in the intercultural awareness that comes from sustained engagement with another way of seeing the world.

At the University of Leeds, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience alongside your linguistic and cultural studies. You will develop your language skills through intensive study and practice, and will explore French and Francophone culture and society through optional modules in areas including translation and interpreting, history, visual culture, and cinema. Leeds has a strong modern languages faculty, and the programme is designed to produce graduates who are genuinely versatile, able to use French confidently in professional contexts and to engage critically with questions of culture, diversity, and communication.

You will develop advanced written and spoken French, translation skills, cultural and literary analysis, and the intercultural competence needed to work effectively with native speakers in professional settings. The placement year provides direct experience in a French-speaking environment, whether through employment or study, and consolidates the linguistic gains of the early years of the programme.

Graduates from French programmes pursue careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy, the foreign and civil service, journalism, teaching, publishing, and the cultural sector. French graduates are also valued in law, finance, and consulting firms with European operations. Further study in French, translation, European studies, or education is a common next step, and qualified teacher status through a PGCE is the route into secondary language teaching for many graduates.
