French and Theatre Studies

French and theatre studies is an unusual and genuinely stimulating combination, connecting two disciplines that share a deep interest in representation, performance, and the relationship between language and meaning. French opens access to one of Europe's richest literary, intellectual, and theatrical traditions, from Moliere and Racine through the existentialists and the Theatre of the Absurd to contemporary Francophone drama across Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Theatre studies, meanwhile, examines performance in all its dimensions: its history, its theories, its social and political functions, and the creative processes through which it is made.

At Warwick this four-year full-time programme allows you to develop genuine depth in both areas, drawing on the full range of expertise available in two well-established departments. In modern languages you will study language at an appropriate level from beginner, post-beginner, or advanced depending on your existing knowledge, and engage with French cultural and literary study alongside translation work. In theatre studies you will explore the history of performance, the diversity of national theatre cultures, the theories that have shaped how we understand what performance does, and the ways in which theatre functions in public life and political discourse.

A sandwich year is built into the degree, giving you the opportunity to spend a year in a professional context before you complete your studies. Work placement experience is embedded in the programme, ensuring you graduate with both academic knowledge and practical understanding of how your skills apply in professional settings.

Graduates pursue careers in theatre, arts administration, cultural education, broadcasting, journalism, translation, international cultural institutions, and education. The French component extends your reach into Francophone cultural organisations and opens opportunities in European and international contexts. Many also continue to postgraduate study in theatre, French studies, or translation.
