French and Norwegian

French and Norwegian represent an unusual and intellectually rich pairing within the modern languages curriculum. French is one of the most widely spoken and diplomatically significant languages in the world, carrying a literary and philosophical tradition that has shaped Western culture for centuries and retaining its importance as the official language of numerous international organisations and a substantial part of Africa. Norwegian, by contrast, is the language of a smaller nation but one with an outsized cultural and economic presence: Norway's literature, from Ibsen and Hamsun to contemporary crime fiction, its film industry, and its distinctive approach to welfare and governance make it a fascinating subject of study, quite apart from the Norwegian language's structural relationship to the other Scandinavian tongues.

At University College London, this four-year, full-time programme develops advanced proficiency in both languages alongside deep engagement with the cultures, histories, and literatures of the French-speaking and Norwegian-speaking worlds. You will move from the close reading of literary and cultural texts to translation, critical writing, oral communication, and the historical contexts that shaped both traditions.
