French and Latin

French and Latin is a degree that brings together two of the most important linguistic and cultural traditions in the history of Western Europe. Latin is the language of classical Rome, of Cicero and Virgil and Ovid, of mediaeval scholarship and early modern science, and it is the ancestor from which French, along with the other Romance languages, descended. French is one of the world's major modern languages, spoken natively by over 75 million people and used internationally in diplomacy, culture, and business.

Studying them together gives you a depth of linguistic and cultural understanding that neither offers alone, connecting the ancient Roman world to the modern French-speaking world across centuries of linguistic evolution.

At University College London, this four-year full-time BA divides equally between your two chosen subjects. The French strand is taught in the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, covering not only language skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, but also cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics. The Latin strand develops your reading of classical texts across genres, from epic and lyric poetry to prose history and philosophical writing.

The programme includes modules from a wide variety, allowing you to tailor your study to your areas of interest. A typical entry tariff of 152 points applies.

You will develop high-level proficiency in French alongside a deep reading knowledge of Latin, as well as the analytical, argumentative, and research skills that literary and cultural study demands.

Graduates from French and Latin programmes go on to careers in education, translation and interpreting, journalism, publishing, the civil service and diplomatic service, cultural institutions, arts administration, and many other fields. Postgraduate study in French, classics, comparative literature, or translation is a natural next step for those drawn to research or specialist professional work.
