French and Journalism Studies

French is one of the world's major languages, spoken across five continents and serving as a working language of international organisations, diplomacy, and global commerce. Studying it to degree level takes you far beyond language competence into the literature, culture, history, and politics of the French-speaking world, giving you a rich understanding of one of Europe's most influential intellectual and artistic traditions. Journalism, meanwhile, is the discipline concerned with how information is gathered, verified, structured, and communicated to a public audience.

It requires you to write and think clearly under pressure, to understand how media organisations work, and to engage critically with questions of truth, representation, and the relationship between journalism and democracy.

At the University of Stirling you will pursue this four-year programme full time, with a year abroad embedded in the degree. That international year typically takes you to a French-speaking country, deepening your language skills through immersion while also broadening your understanding of French-language journalism, media cultures, and public debate. Across the four years you will develop your French to a high level, including the ability to read, write and speak with fluency across a range of registers, and you will gain practical and theoretical grounding in journalism practice, media analysis, and editorial judgement.

Graduates of French and Journalism are well placed for careers in print, broadcast and digital journalism, in communications and public affairs roles, in international organisations, in translation and interpreting, and in education. The combination of a major world language and professional media training is distinctive and valued wherever clear cross-cultural communication matters. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in journalism, international relations, European studies, translation, or media and communications, building on the dual expertise the degree provides.
