French and Italian

French and Italian together represent two of Europe's most distinguished literary and cultural traditions, connected by their shared Latin roots yet distinct in their particular genius, their histories, and the civilisations they have shaped. French is the language of Descartes and Proust, of the French Revolution and the Enlightenment, of contemporary francophone literature from Africa and the Caribbean as well as Europe. Italian is the language of Dante, Machiavelli, and Calvino, of the Renaissance, of opera, and of one of the world's great artistic and culinary traditions.

Studying both develops a rare breadth of cultural knowledge and the bilingual flexibility that multilingual professional life increasingly demands.

At the University of York, this four-year full-time degree takes a distinctive approach to language teaching, with tuition conducted in the language being studied from early in the programme. You will enter Italian as a beginner, developing from zero proficiency to a high level of competence across the four years, while continuing to advance your French. Teaching focuses on society, politics, and culture, embedding language learning in meaningful engagement with real cultural and contemporary content rather than isolated grammatical exercise.

A work placement is incorporated into the degree, providing direct professional experience in a French or Italian-speaking context and a significant advantage in the graduate job market. Many staff are native speakers, supporting the programme's commitment to authentic linguistic engagement.
