French and Hungarian

French and Hungarian is an unusual and intellectually stimulating combination, bringing together one of the world's most widely spoken and culturally influential Romance languages with a Uralic language that stands apart from the Indo-European family altogether. Learning Hungarian alongside French develops not just bilingual competence but a genuine understanding of how radically different languages can be, and what that difference reveals about the cultures and peoples who use them.

At University College London, this four-year joint Honours programme divides your time equally between French and Hungarian. You will develop all four language skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, alongside translation, in both languages. Beyond the purely linguistic, you will explore cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics in each language's context, giving you a rounded understanding of the societies and traditions that have shaped contemporary French-speaking and Hungarian-speaking worlds.

The programme is designed to be flexible, allowing you to tailor your study to your particular interests, whether those lean towards cultural analysis, linguistics, or literary study. The third year is spent abroad, split between two countries where your languages are spoken, which is essential to developing genuine fluency and cultural confidence. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points.

Graduates with strong French and Hungarian language skills are well positioned in a job market that values genuine bilingual or multilingual ability, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, which has growing economic and diplomatic significance.
