About this course

French and history is a combination that brings the linguistic and cultural richness of France and the Francophone world into dialogue with the discipline of historical understanding. French opens access to a culture that has shaped European and global history through its literature, philosophy, revolution, and political thought, and it is a language of enduring practical value in international affairs, business, and diplomacy. History develops your ability to research evidence, interpret primary sources, and construct well-evidenced arguments about what happened and why, across a wide range of periods and geographical contexts.

At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme develops your French language and cultural knowledge to an advanced level alongside your skills in historical analysis and research. You will study French and Francophone literature, culture, and contemporary affairs while exploring historical periods, themes, and debates that develop your critical and analytical thinking. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the experience of studying in a French-speaking environment and deepening your language fluency and cultural understanding.

Entry typically requires around 168 UCAS tariff points.

Graduates of French and history work in journalism, the diplomatic service, education, publishing, cultural institutions, heritage and archives, the civil service, international organisations, and a wide range of professional roles where the combination of language skills and historical understanding is valued. The close reading, research, and analytical writing abilities the degree develops are also transferable across many sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in French, history, or European studies.

Overall a solid programme but worth going in with open eyes. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city …
