French and History
French and History is a pairing with genuine intellectual depth, because France has been central to European and world history for centuries, and studying the French language gives you access to primary sources, political debates, and cultural traditions that are essential for any serious engagement with that history. At the same time, historical study illuminates the events, forces and ideas that shaped the society whose language you are learning, making French literature, film and contemporary culture far richer and more comprehensible. At the University of Chester, this four-year full-time programme develops both strands with genuine breadth. You will explore nearly two millennia of history, engaging with the ancient, medieval, early modern and contemporary periods, and developing the research and analytical skills that historical study demands. Your French studies develop through small, supportive group teaching from the foundations of the language through to advanced engagement with literature, cinema and contemporary Francophone culture.
The sandwich year gives you extended professional experience, and work placement is also integrated throughout the programme, supporting your development as a graduate ready for the labour market.
