About this course

French and geography is a combination that connects genuine linguistic and cultural expertise with the analytical rigour of an earth and human science. Geography examines the interaction of environmental systems and human activity, from climate change, biodiversity and resource management to urbanisation, geopolitics, migration and development. French opens direct access to the scholarly, cultural and practical dimensions of one of the world's major languages, used across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and beyond, and allows you to engage with geographic questions in French-language contexts that would be inaccessible without that linguistic capability.

At the University of Aberdeen you will study French and geography over five years of full-time study, with a period of study at a French university built into the programme. This international study period is a significant element: it allows you to examine geography in a French context, engage with French-language scholarship in the discipline, and develop the genuine linguistic fluency that professional use of French requires. You will develop skills in geographical fieldwork, spatial analysis, environmental science and the quantitative and qualitative methods geographers use, alongside the language and cultural knowledge of the French strand.

The typical tariff of 200 reflects the combined academic demands of two disciplines that each require sustained commitment and ability.

Graduates are particularly well placed for careers in international development, environmental consultancy, planning, the civil service, European and international organisations, teaching, journalism and a broad range of roles where both geographic analytical skills and French language competency are relevant. Adding a European language to a geography degree broadens the range of career opportunities considerably, particularly in organisations working across French-speaking Africa, in European environmental policy, or in international comparative research. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in geography, French, environmental management, international development or area studies.

Highly recommend
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good …

Would do it again
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable …
