French and Economics

French and Economics is a combination that pairs one of the world's most widely spoken languages with one of the most analytically rigorous social sciences. French is spoken as a first language by over 100 million people and as a second language by many millions more across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia, making it a genuinely global language with strong commercial, diplomatic, and cultural significance. Economics provides the quantitative and theoretical tools to understand how markets, governments, and international institutions work.

At Strathclyde this four-year full-time programme develops both disciplines to a high standard. You will build genuine proficiency in French, engaging with the language through communication, literature, and cultural study, while the economics component covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods, and a range of specialist areas. The typical entry tariff is 200 UCAS points.

The combination is particularly strong for careers in international business, finance, and policy, where the ability to communicate fluently in French while thinking analytically about economic questions is a distinctive and valued combination.

Graduates from French and economics programmes pursue careers in international banking and financial services, management consulting, the civil service and diplomatic corps, international organisations such as the European Commission and United Nations, journalism, and multinational business. French language proficiency is particularly valued by employers with significant operations in France, Francophone Africa, or international institutions based in Brussels, Paris, or Geneva. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study in economics, international business, or French studies, combining their language and analytical skills at a higher level.
