Foundation to Orthoptics

Orthoptics is a healthcare profession specialising in the assessment and management of eye movement disorders, binocular vision problems and visual impairment, particularly as they affect children. Orthoptists work alongside ophthalmologists and optometrists to investigate and treat conditions including squint (strabismus), amblyopia (lazy eye), double vision, nystagmus and the visual consequences of neurological conditions. The profession requires thorough knowledge of eye anatomy and physiology, skilled clinical examination technique, and the ability to work sensitively with patients across the age range.

At the University of Liverpool, this programme begins with a Year 0 foundation element before proceeding to the main orthoptics degree. The full programme is studied over four years full-time and includes a year abroad, providing the opportunity to experience orthoptic practice and education in an international setting. Clinical placements form a central part of the programme, with supervised practice in NHS eye departments and community settings developing your clinical skills progressively alongside the academic study of ocular science, neurology, paediatrics and visual assessment.

On qualifying, graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and work as orthoptists within the NHS and independent healthcare sector. The profession offers a clear career development pathway, with routes into specialist roles in paediatric ophthalmology, neurological visual impairment, low vision rehabilitation, research and clinical management. Orthoptists are a relatively small but highly skilled professional group, and there are consistent career opportunities in NHS eye departments across the UK, as well as in international healthcare settings and research institutions.
