About this course

The Foundation to Medicine (Year 0) pathway is designed for students who are committed to becoming doctors but whose prior qualifications do not yet meet the requirements for direct entry to a five-year medicine programme. The foundation year, sometimes called Year 0, provides the scientific grounding, study skills, and academic preparation needed before you begin the undergraduate medical curriculum, extending the total programme to six years. This route acknowledges that exceptional potential for medicine is not always matched by precisely the right combination of A-level subjects, and it provides a supported pathway for students who meet the right criteria to pursue this vocation.

The University of Liverpool's six-year full-time Foundation to Medicine (Year 0) programme combines the foundation year with Liverpool's full medical degree. The foundation year develops your understanding of the biological sciences, chemistry, and the quantitative skills needed for medicine, alongside the study habits and academic confidence required for a demanding professional degree. The main medical programme that follows is built on a patient-centred and problem-based learning approach, integrating clinical experience with scientific study from an early stage.

Liverpool's medical school has strong clinical partnerships in the North West, giving you access to a wide range of clinical environments across the region. The programme includes a year abroad, which provides an opportunity to experience healthcare and medical education in a different national context, broadening your clinical perspective.

A typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the academic standard required for the foundation year entry point, and selection also takes into account motivation, personal qualities, and suitability for medicine.

Completion of the programme leads to the primary medical qualification and eligibility to apply for foundation year training, the first step toward independent medical practice across any specialty in the NHS.

Highly recommend
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: anatomy teaching here is particularly strong β€” full dissection experience. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit ot…

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the integration between pre-clinical teaching and placements is well designed. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cost of living i…
