Forensic Science

Forensic science applies the methods of the natural sciences to criminal investigation, asking how physical, chemical, biological, and digital evidence can be collected, analysed, and interpreted to help establish facts in criminal proceedings. From DNA profiling and toxicology to digital forensics and fingerprint analysis, the discipline spans an enormous range of scientific methods and requires both technical rigour and an understanding of the legal and procedural context in which forensic evidence must function.

At Teesside University, this four-year full-time degree with foundation year provides an accessible entry route for students who need to build their scientific foundations before entering the core forensic science programme. The foundation year introduces you to the scientific and research skills you will need, including an awareness of how data science, community safety, and interdisciplinary methods interact in the forensic context. In the honours programme, you will develop knowledge across the core scientific disciplines that underpin forensic work, including chemistry, biology, and digital analysis, as well as the practical skills to handle evidence and conduct analyses to the standard required in a legal context.

The sandwich year gives you extended professional experience in a forensic or scientific environment, and work placement is integrated throughout.

You will also develop an understanding of the criminal justice system, the procedures that govern how forensic evidence is gathered and presented, and the ethical responsibilities of working with sensitive material.

Graduates go on to careers in crime scene investigation, forensic laboratory analysis, toxicology, digital forensics, law enforcement support, and environmental testing. Many also pursue postgraduate study in forensic science, specialising in a particular analytical area or going on to research in academic or government forensic science institutions.
