About this course

Forensic science is the application of scientific knowledge and methods to the investigation of crime and legal proceedings. It encompasses a wide range of disciplines, from chemistry, biology and physics to digital forensics and toxicology, all directed towards gathering, preserving, analysing and presenting physical evidence in ways that meet the standards of the legal system. Forensic scientists work at crime scenes, in laboratories and in courtrooms, providing the scientific evidence that helps investigators establish what happened and supports or challenges claims made in legal proceedings.

At Keele, this three-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study forensic science in a different national context and broaden your academic and professional perspective. Keele's programme is accredited, which is a mark of quality and professional relevance within the forensic science community. You will develop your knowledge of the scientific principles underlying forensic analysis, including chemistry, biology, genetics and physical science, alongside the specific techniques used in forensic practice: trace evidence examination, DNA profiling, bloodstain pattern analysis, digital evidence recovery and the presentation of forensic evidence in court.

Laboratory work is central to your training, and you will develop the practical skills and methodological rigour that forensic science demands. You will also engage with the legal and ethical frameworks that govern the admissibility of forensic evidence and the professional responsibilities of forensic scientists.

Graduates move into forensic science laboratories, policing, crime scene investigation, toxicology, environmental analysis, pharmaceutical quality control and teaching. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in forensic science, analytical chemistry or related fields, and some pursue professional membership of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.
