Food & Nutritional Sciences and Health & Wellbeing
Food and nutritional sciences combined with health and wellbeing is a degree that takes a broad, integrated view of how what we eat shapes health at individual and population levels. Nutritional sciences examines the composition of food, how nutrients are digested and metabolised, and what the evidence says about dietary patterns and health outcomes. Health and wellbeing adds the social, environmental, and behavioural dimensions: the factors beyond diet that determine how healthy people are, and the public health frameworks for promoting wellbeing and preventing illness.
The combination prepares graduates to understand the root causes of ill health and to contribute to efforts to address them.
At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme goes beyond medicine to understand the full picture of what determines health. It responds to the growing policy emphasis on prevention rather than treatment, developing graduates who can contribute to public health nutrition, health promotion, and the evidence-based design of interventions that support wellbeing. A foundation year provides additional preparation for those who would benefit, a sandwich year gives you professional experience in a relevant setting, and a year abroad allows you to engage with different approaches to food, nutrition, and health promotion internationally.
Work placement activity is integrated throughout the programme. A typical entry tariff of 104 points applies.
You will study the science of nutrition alongside behavioural, social, and environmental perspectives on health, developing both quantitative and qualitative research skills and the ability to communicate health information effectively to different audiences.
Graduates go on to work in public health, health promotion, dietetics (with further qualification), food industry roles, nutrition consultancy, community health, government agencies, and the charity sector. Postgraduate study in public health nutrition, dietetics, or health promotion is a natural route for those seeking specialist clinical or policy roles.
