Fine Art

Fine art is the practice and study of visual art as a discipline in its own right, concerned not just with making objects but with understanding why and how making matters. It occupies the intersection of creative practice and critical thought, asking how artistic choices communicate, how art relates to the culture that produces it, and how working with materials, images and ideas can challenge assumptions and extend understanding. A fine art degree develops your visual intelligence, critical vocabulary, practical skills and ability to work experimentally across different media and approaches.

At the University of Salford you will study for three years full-time, following a programme that places creative play and creative thinking at the centre. You will explore a range of art practices, learning to work across media while also developing the ability to question, reflect and define your own identity as an artist. Theory and research are integrated with studio practice, not treated as separate from it, so that the ideas that inform making and the making that tests ideas are understood as part of the same process.

You will build a body of work that demonstrates both technical ability and intellectual coherence.

Fine art graduates work across the creative industries in roles including studio artist, art educator, curator, arts administrator, art director and community arts practitioner. Many go into education, either through PGCE routes into school teaching or through adult and community education contexts. Others work in galleries, museums, arts funding bodies, creative agencies and the broader cultural sector.

The skills developed in a fine art degree, visual thinking, independent research, creative problem-solving, project management and critical articulation, are also valued in design, communications and media. Many fine art graduates pursue postgraduate study in fine art, curatorial practice, art history or arts management.
