Fine Art

Fine art is a degree concerned with making work that engages seriously with ideas, materials, context and meaning. It is a discipline that places you as an artist within a broad set of social, cultural, historical and intellectual conversations, and asks you to develop your own practice with rigour, curiosity and independence. Fine art at degree level is not craft instruction: it is the development of a creative intelligence that can work across media, respond to context and participate meaningfully in the contemporary art world.

At the University of Lincoln, the three-year full-time degree focuses on the artist as a socially responsive, publicly aware practitioner, operating within physical, intellectual and digital networks and referencing local, national and global artistic platforms. You will develop your own creative practice across a range of media and approaches, supported by staff with their own professional practices and research, and in an environment designed to nurture creative development and expression. Studio work is central to the degree, and you will spend significant time making, experimenting, evaluating and presenting your work.

The degree includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience in arts organisations, galleries, studios or other creative contexts.

Graduates of fine art degrees pursue careers as practising artists, often combining exhibition work with teaching, arts administration, community arts practice, gallery management or other creative professional roles.
