Fine Art

Fine art is a discipline concerned with making: with developing a distinctive artistic practice, understanding the traditions and ideas that inform it, and producing work that operates at the level of form, concept, and cultural meaning. It encompasses an extraordinarily wide range of media and approaches, from painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking through to photography, film, installation, performance, and digital practice. What unites them is a commitment to rigorous creative thinking, a willingness to take risks, and the development of a personal voice grounded in critical awareness.

At the University of Chester, this full-time, three-year programme provides a dynamic and inspiring environment in which to explore, develop, and deploy your creative potential. You will engage with painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, lens-based media, and time-based practice, with the opportunity to focus on the areas most relevant to your individual practice as you progress through the degree. The programme develops both your technical expertise and your conceptual thinking, equipping you with the skills to work confidently and ambitiously as a fine artist in the contemporary creative landscape.

A year abroad is included in the programme, broadening your artistic and cultural perspective beyond the UK. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Fine art graduates pursue careers across the creative sector and beyond. Practicing artists, gallery educators, arts administrators, curators, community artists, arts journalists, and arts education professionals are all common destinations. The skills developed during a fine art degree, including creative problem-solving, independent critical thinking, visual communication, and the capacity to develop and sustain a body of work, are also valued in design, advertising, communications, and digital media.

Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine studio practice with other creative work. Postgraduate options include fine art MFA programmes and PhDs in art practice or visual culture.
