Fine Art

Fine art is the practice and critical study of visual art across drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, installation, performance, and digital media. At degree level, it is not simply a technical training in these media but an intellectual and creative enquiry into what art is, what it can do, and how it functions within culture and society. Studio practice is at the heart of fine art education, but it is always accompanied by art history, theory, and criticism, which provide the conceptual and historical frameworks within which your own work develops.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year with work placement and work placement opportunities throughout. The placement year is an unusual feature for a fine art degree and gives you the opportunity to engage with the art world in a professional context, whether in a gallery, arts organisation, educational institution, or studio-based business. This practical experience is increasingly valued by graduates who want to navigate the art sector with realistic expectations of how it works and with professional connections that complement their studio practice.

Throughout the programme, you will develop your creative work in response to critical dialogue with tutors and fellow students, studying the history and theory of contemporary art alongside your practical investigations.
